1. Mencius, occupying the position of a high dignitary in Ch'?, went on a mission of condolence to T'?ng.
—literally, 'because of the possibility of speak'. As criminal judge, Ch'? Wa would be often in communication with the king, and could remonstrate on any failures in the administration of justice that came under his notice.
3. 所以为 (in 3rd tone), literally, 'whereby for',=所以为之处, as in the translation.
